Open Inventor is an object-oriented toolkit for developing interactive, 3D graphics applications. It also defines a standard file format for exchanging 3D data among applications.
Open Inventor serves as the basis for the VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) standard. See the VRML home page for more information. An overview of the relationship between Inventor and VRML is available here. Be sure to check out WebSpace, SGI's free VRML viewer which is written using Open Inventor.
Speed, Speed, Speed! The goal of version 2.1 was to increase rendering frame rates. Though the results vary from application to application, we've seen increases in the 20% to 400% range. On occasion, an application achieves a 1000% increase (10x). Open Inventor 2.1 details here.
